Guide to Pass Plus

Whether you’re a first time driver yet to sit your driving test, or a newly qualified driver, you should consider taking Pass Plus driving course. This is an additional training course designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), aimed specifically at new drivers.

The DSA know that, statistically speaking, new drivers are more likely to have a road accident during their first two years on the road. To combat this, the DSA have launched the Pass Plus course, designed to further increase your driving skills and road knowledge so that you are a safer and more confident road user.

As well as boosting your confidence and driving ability, the course is recognised by a wide range of car insurers, like Kwik Fit Insurance*, who will reward you for your safer driving skills. Upon passing the Pass Plus course you will be eligible for car insurance discounts from many car insurance companies, so when you go insurance hunting, be sure to ask if this discount is available to you.

So, what does the Pass Plus test involve? There are six practical modules in the programme – driving in town, driving in all weathers, driving on rural roads, driving at night, driving on dual carriageways and driving on motorways. The course usually takes a minimum of six hours to complete, and there is no final assessment. Instead drivers taking the course will be continually assessed, and need to meet the standards set by the DSA.

The cost of the Pass Plus course varies throughout the country depending on your location, the instructor and the driving school that you choose to use, and how many extra hours you may need to complete the training successfully. However, the savings that you make on insurance upon course completion could actually cover the cost of the Pass Plus course.

If you are low on funds, then your local council may be able to help. Due to the success of the Pass Plus scheme in preventing road accidents among first-time car drivers, some UK councils now offer financial help to pay for the course, with some offering discounts of up to 50%. Details of councils running this scheme are available online at the Pass Plus website.

And you don’t need to be a first time driver to benefit from the course and its associated car insurance discounts. Anyone in possession of a full UK driving licence is eligible to take part too.
